The Scenario and means of tackling issues within it.

The Counsellor

The scenario

A young black african male seeks counselling, the counsellor is a middle-aged white man of western background.

The young african man wishes to discuss his skin tone and how it affects him causing alienation in certain aspects of his life.

The client

The possible solution

The counsellor will address the difference within the counselling room. Looking at power dynamics, and vulnerability. Offering a safe and non judgmental space he can look at the clients  difficulties, difference and success due to his skin tone. The counsellor may look into how the client sees his skin tone as an asset or how he has been alienated for it. Addressing whether underlying social stereotypes is attached to this or if there is room to turn experiences into success. He will listen to how the difference effects emotion and feelings. Using that empathy, up holding positive regard and remebering boundaries to maintain the safe space. They may explore and understand the emotions and feelings within the situations. The client may become more comfortable with himself and develop strategies to find more successes and self-actualise.

The literature

Tolen 2017.

In counselling whilst empathising it will involve a fearless exploration of another’s inner world, a sensing of meanings unspoken, a compassionate naming of pain, suffering, and humiliation, and of mischievousness and joy. This offers the possibility to look at a sensitive issue and discuss feelings and prejudice but remebering to maintain positive regard.
